Cement Sand and Aggregate

Cement sand and aggregate are the most essential materials used in the construction of the structures. Cement is used as a binding material in both mortar and concrete.

Cement Sand and Aggregate

Cement

Cement is utilized as a binding material in the concrete which is very useful for different engineering works. Where strength and durability are of significant importance for this purpose OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) is commonly used, When the work is to be carried out quickly then RHC (Rapid Hardening Cement).

The cement is to be used should be as fresh as possible.

Function Of Cement:

1) It makes the concrete impermeable by filling the voids present in the aggregate.

2) It binds the aggregate into a solid mass.

3) It imparts the strength to the concrete.

Sand:

It consists of small angular or rounded grains of silica and it is formed by decomposition or breaking of sandstone under the effect of weathering action. Sand is also called the fine aggregates.

It may be either natural sand or artificial sand prepared by crushing of stone and gravels to powder form. It should be washed with freshwater and before use;  the dust is removed.

#Function Of Sand:

It fills the void present in the coarse aggregate.

– It provides strength shape and size to the concrete.

– It allows water to penetrate through its voids.

– It minimizes shrinkage and cracking of concrete.

– It prepares concrete economically of desired by varying its proportion.

Coarse aggregate:

– It is the main constituent of concrete.

– Broken bricks, Broken stones, gravel are generally used as coarse aggregate help to minimize volume changing of concrete.

#Properties of Aggregate:

It should be angular or cubical in shape.

– It should be harder.

– It should be absolutely clean.

– It should be well graded.

– It should be free from chemical or coating of clay.

– It should be durable.

#The function of aggregate:

– It makes a solid and hard mass of concrete with cement and sand.

– It imparts greater volume matrix stability and the durability of concrete.

– It is cheaper than cement. Hence helps in the economy.
